Why Did Dr. Alan McCool Found ICONA Health?
You’re a urologist by training. What prompted you to pursue women’s hormone care, and why are you so passionate about it?The first reason was my wife, Amy. She started developing symptoms and knew I treated men with hormone issues. She asked, “Can you do this for women?” At that point, I needed additional training. I spent the next two years attending conferences, taking classes, and learning more about caring for women with hormone-related symptoms. During that same time, I had family members experiencing symptoms and was hearing similar questions from women in my urology practice. They would see their husbands feeling better on hormone replacement therapy and ask, “What can I do?” I would suggest they speak with their gynecologist, but some came back feeling their concerns hadn’t been addressed. That helped Amy and me recognize a need for appointments with enough time to listen, discuss symptoms, and educate patients about their options. It was a big part of why we opened ICONA Health together. — Transcript edited for clarity and reviewed by Alan McCool, MD, FACS on October 23, 2026.
